Efficient food waste management is a priority for local authorities and businesses alike. Since the 1st of january 2024, the EU Waste Framework Directive has required all European territories to sort organic waste at source. Under this legal framework, implementing the right setup is essential to make sorting as easy as possible.
To collect household food waste while supporting sustainable transport, various bins can be used for either communal drop-off points or door-to-door collection. Which solution is right for you?
Communal bins : accessible drop-off points
Communal bins or drop-off points for voluntary disposal, allow residents to dispose of their food waste at strategically located collection points. This collection method, set up by local authorities, is easy to deploy. It is particularly well-suited to densely populated residential areas but can reduce citizens’ involvement in sorting, unlike door-to-door collection.
Door-to-door collection
Door-to-door collection means picking up food waste directly from residents’ homes using dedicated organic waste bins, sorted separately from general waste. This method ensures regular collections and encourages greater participation from households.
Although it requires careful planning, it enables high-quality sorting and significantly reduces waste contamination. While highly effective, this method requires greater logistical, financial, and human resources.
Compatible bio-waste collection systems for the BioCapsule®
Both types of collection systems are suitable for sustainable transport methods, such as cargo bikes and other low-carbon transport.
These collection methods can be easily integrated into our renewable energy production solution based on bio-waste, the BioCapsule®. Designed to process up to 800 tons of food waste per year within a footprint of just 60 m², the BioCapsule® integrates seamlessly with both systems:
● Public drop-off points: Food waste left at your local collection points is picked up regularly and taken to the nearest BioCapsule® for local and cost-effective recovery.
● Kerbside collection : The bio-waste picked up by the collector isgathered from within a 5 km area and then directly recovered in the nearby BioCapsule®.
BONUS: A turnkey solution for large-scale producers of bio-waste!
The BioCapsule® can be connected directly to your existing food waste disposal system, without needing any transport. The result? Maximum cost-efficiency and a minimal environmental footprint!
High-volume waste producers don’t even need a collection service!
